CHAPTER 19

Hours later, Favor stepped out of Ruth's car into the crisp air, a hand resting gently on her swelling belly. Harriet got out, too, and her gaze lingered on the newly built extension of the family home.

"Look, Favor, it's finally complete. Well, it certainly looks it from here." Harriet's eyes were wide with wonder.

"They've done a lot since we've been gone," Cherish said.

"Let's have a closer look." Harriet led the way. Ruth got out of the car and followed.

The extension, a robust wood and stone structure, stood proudly against the backdrop of Favor and Simon's non-traditional Amish home.

They walked to the doorway and looked at the small living room with the kitchen in one corner.

Favor moved slowly, her hand caressing the smooth surfaces of the kitchen cupboards, imagining the laughter and love the room would soon contain. "It's more than I ever hoped for. Now, we can all be together, but not together, Harriet."

"Ma," Harriet gently reminded Favor.

"Ma." Favor repeated with a grin.

Cherish stayed silent, still shocked that Favor would want her meddling in-laws so close. She'd never get used to how Favor had quickly changed her mind about Harriet and Melvin.

As they admired the new addition, Simon and Melvin emerged from the main house, their faces beaming.

"Welcome home, my love," Simon said, putting his arm around Favor.

Melvin nodded at Harriet and the others with a satisfied grin.

"We wanted to surprise you," Simon continued, guiding Favor through his parents’ new space. “Pa and I, along with some help from the community, worked hard to get this done as quickly as we could. What do you think of it, Ma?"

Harriet looked around. "It's perfect. Thank you."

Favor looked around, her eyes taking in every detail. "It's beautiful," she murmured.

Melvin added, "There's still some interior work to be done in the bedrooms, but we'll have it ready well before the baby arrives."

Harriet nodded her approval, a rare smile touching her lips.

"We'll finish it within a couple of weeks, I'd say," Simon said.

The women wandered through the two bedrooms and the small bathroom, discussing plans for furnishings.

As they talked, Favor imagined a crib in the corner of one of the bedrooms for when Harriet had the baby overnight. Her mother had been somewhat distant and distracted when she'd been growing up. That's why it was nice to have Harriet solely focused on her and her baby.

Ruth nodded. "It all looks good, a great addition to the neighborhood. And where are the alpacas?"

Melvin pointed in the distance. "They're in that yard. We've got more coming."

"Ah, good. You've got the place nicely set up for an extended family farm. So, Cherish, are you ready to go?" Ruth asked.

"Yes, I'm ready."

They said their goodbyes, and then Cherish and Ruth returned to the car.

Ruth's car rolled to a stop in front of Cherish's house a few minutes later. The silence was suddenly broken by the sound of excited barking from Caramel. Malachi came out of the barn and hurried to the car with Wally, the goose, following behind.
